Research focus: | The resilience of landscapes and ecosystems to climate change depends largely on how they respond to extremely fluctuating water supply. The border area between Saxony and the Czech Republic is particularly affected by environmental risks resulting from floods and droughts (frequent flooding, forest dieback, forest fires). The activities of beavers can lead to a rebalancing of the water balance, an increase in biodiversity and thus an increase in the resilience of the region to climate change. In addition to the positive effects (e.g. renaturalisation of watercourses, increased retention), negative effects (e.g. undermining, unwanted flooding) must also be taken into account. A specific characteristic of beavers is their desire to create a favourable environment by building dams in watercourses. This changes the hydraulic, hydrological and ecological conditions both above and below the dams. Whether and under what conditions these changes are significant for regional surface and groundwater conditions is not yet clear. As a result, local authorities and water and environmental authorities do not have a reliable basis for deciding and arguing whether beaver dams should be retained on a watercourse or whether adaptation measures are necessary. The project therefore aims to show to what extent beaver dams can positively contribute to mitigating and overcoming environmental risks caused by climate change in the border region. |
